That Giant Leap

by on Jul.20, 2016, under Society

It’s been forty-seven years today since we landed on the moon. (Lu Parker would be so happy.)

Neil Armstrong’s small step out of Apollo 11 was indeed one giant leap for mankind. Here’s hoping that we continue to advance, not just in science and technology but in everything that we do.

The Holtz

by on Jul.20, 2016, under Film & TV

In honor of my favorite Ghostbuster of the new era – Jillian Holtzmann – here are some Kate McKinnon classics, including the Pantene parody where I first noticed her.

Kate is such a talented chameleon and is the best part of the reboot, followed by Leslie Jones and Chris Hemsworth. (Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig were also great, but those first three are just such riots.)

Kate deserves more projects. I anticipate – nay, demand more DeBarging Holtzmann in the sequel.

Yes, I have a girl crush.

Swift Justice

by on Jul.19, 2016, under Music & Theater

I was planning to write my full thoughts around the current Taylor Swift slash Kim Kardashian and Kanye West recorded call controversy, but then I came upon the Facebook comment to the left on Taylor’s page. It summarizes my thoughts extremely well, so I’m just going to leave it right here.

P.S. I despise Kanye and the Kardashians, but hell just froze over because I actually agree with them on this one. The problem with Taylor is that she always plays the victim card and the innocence card, but she’s now proven to be a lying manipulative person. A hypocrite, too. Yes, in that 2009 incident she was the victim, but since then, she’s just unravelled her true Regina George self. At least the Kardashians don’t pretend to be sweet and innocent.

Chris and Chris

by on Jul.18, 2016, under Film & TV

I have newfound respect (and love) for both Chris Hemsworth and Chris Pine.

Both A-list leading Hollywood men, they willingly accepted work as second fiddle to women.

I’d hire him. Wouldn’t you?

Hemsworth is currently in the Ghostbusters remake/reboot, which has stirred some controversy because of its all-female lineup. When the cast was announced last year, misogynists everywhere came out of the woodwork to decry the film without having even seen it – pretending that the anger is borne out of the “raping of their childhoods” (seriously) when in fact their issue is that four women not Angelina Jolie or Milla Jovovich would be kicking asses in an action/adventure film.

Dive In The Pool

Thank you, Gay Times, for this wonderful feature on LGBT athletes heading over to Rio for the 2016 Olympics. This year, we apparently have a record number of LGBT participants in the event.

Or perhaps, this might just be a year where we have a record number of out and proud participants, for I cannot imagine all prior events have had no (secretly) LGBTs amongst the athletes.

And so this year still marks a pretty good milestone for our community – for now we are diving headfirst into the pool outly and proudly without qualms.

Mango Says Bite Me

by on Jul.15, 2016, under Snark, Society

God made Philippine mangoes, and it was good.

Run!

Hide!

Flee to the hills!

Chinese social media users have, oh my goddess of mercy, threatened to boycott Filipino mangoes because of the Hague ruling regarding the West Philippine Sea!

This will, like, destroy our economy and everything! We’ll have no more means to sustain our growth and development! I see starvation! I see hunger! Pestilence is coming! Perhaps even a well-orchestrated locust swarm!

Storming of the Bastille, by Jean-Pierre-Louis-Laurent Houel

Today, France celebrates Bastille Day.

Bastille Day (which they actually call La Fête Nationale or, less formally, Le Quatorze Juillet because we non-French are just not cultured enough) commemorates the Fall of the Bastille Saint-Antoine in 1789, which signalled the start of the French Revolution, as well as Fête de la Fédération, which celebrates the unity of the French in 1790 exactly one year after the famous fortress was stormed.

“Sea” You Around, China.

by on Jul.13, 2016, under Society

Dear China,

Love,

The Philippines

P.S. Whether they abide by the ruling or not, or whether we can actually enforce it or not given that they are a superpower supported by idiots while we are but a small developing country, it is immaterial. The important thing is that the international community has strongly rebuked a growing and arrogant bully.
