Today, a true master of film celebrates his 78th birthday.

People will always remember Francis Ford Coppola for movies like Apocalypse Now and the Godfather series. And of course, rightly so. These are classics not just in Hollywood filmmaking but in the global realm of cinema.

However, for me, Francis Ford Coppola will always be first and foremost Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

I watched that movie in the theater when I was around 14 or 15 years old, and it truly showed me what a master Coppola is when it comes to filmmaking. The story, of course, was based on Stoker’s classic – a novel which helped bring me not only into the vampire genre but also into reading more mature fare – and Coppola translated the fascinating gothic tale that I loved into a lush and dazzling visual masterpiece. It was also truly sensual and beautiful.

Coppola, in short, helped make me become a fan of artistry in film.

Happy birthday, sir!
